Short answer: Some of the best paddling around Vernon is at Kalamalka Beach, Paddlewheel Park in Okanagan Landing, Kin Beach, Ellison Provincial Park and Cosens Bay. Go in the morning, when the water is usually calmest, and carry a lifejacket or PFD, which Transport Canada requires on paddleboards and kayaks.
Best places to paddle
- Kalamalka Beach and Rotary Pier: a classic launch on one of the most colourful lakes in Canada
- Paddlewheel Park, Okanagan Landing: easy beach access on Okanagan Lake
- Kin Park and Canoe Beach: shallow, sheltered water that's good for beginners
- Ellison Provincial Park: clear water, rocky coves and bays to explore
- Cosens Bay: a quieter Kalamalka Lake beach for experienced paddlers
When to go
Mornings and evenings are usually calmest. Afternoon winds can build quickly on both big lakes, so watch the forecast and stay close to shore if you're new.
Gear and safety
- A lifejacket or PFD for each paddler (required by Transport Canada)
- A whistle or sound-signalling device
- A leash for your board
- Sun protection and water
- Tell someone your plan if you're paddling alone
Living where you paddle
Many Okanagan Landing condo owners paddle straight from their building. At The Strand, owners can enter a lottery for a slot on the paddleboard racks beside the marina, so boards don't have to go up and down the elevator. See life at The Strand.
Rentals and lessons
If you're new to paddling, local shops and some beaches offer rentals and lessons in summer. It's a great way to try before you buy a board.
