Short answer: Both lakes are beautiful, but they suit different lifestyles. Kalamalka Lake, on Vernon's southeast side near Coldstream, is known for its brilliant blue-green colours, popular beaches and provincial park. Okanagan Lake, on the west side in Okanagan Landing, is much larger, which makes it better for boating, and it's where you'll find most of Vernon's waterfront condo complexes with private marinas.
Kalamalka Lake
- About 16 km long, famous for its changing shades of blue and green
- Kal Beach, Kirkland Beach and Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park, with Cosens Bay
- Homes are mainly in Coldstream and along the lake's east and west sides
- Great for paddling and swimming
Okanagan Lake
- The Okanagan's largest lake, around 135 km long, stretching south past Kelowna and Penticton
- Big-water boating with room to explore
- In Vernon, the waterfront is centred on Okanagan Landing, with Paddlewheel Park, the Vernon Yacht Club and Ellison Provincial Park
- Most of Vernon's waterfront condo complexes, including The Strand, are here
Which is better for you?
- Choose Kalamalka if you love paddling, swimming and a quieter lake with dramatic colour.
- Choose Okanagan Lake if you boat, want a private marina slip, or prefer a waterfront condo with amenities.
Of course, you don't have to choose. From Okanagan Landing, Kal Beach is only about 15 to 20 minutes away.
